Terms of use
Last updated: 19 October 2026 · Draft for legal review
These terms cover the un/braid Android app and unbraid.app. By installing or using the app, you accept them. You can save or print them at any time. Visiting the website alone is not acceptance.
un/braid is free to use and provided free of charge. Donations buy nothing. You use it entirely at your own risk; as far as the law allows, we accept no responsibility for anything that happens because of it.
One person makes this app. There is no separate company behind it. We have worked carefully, as described in section 7, but cannot guarantee every outcome or pay for every risk. Sections 11 to 13 explain the limits.
Legal limits: No exclusion or limit in these terms applies to our intent or conscious recklessness, or to any liability or right that the law does not allow us to exclude or limit. This includes protected consumer, data protection and product liability rights, and liability for death or personal injury where it cannot be limited.
An exit is the server your traffic leaves from. Direct means no VPN exit. Your tailnet is your private network of Tailscale devices.
1. Who we are
un/braid is made by Quiet Crafts, a Dutch sole proprietorship (eenmanszaak) in Rotterdam. A sole proprietorship is one person’s business, not a separate legal person. In these terms, “we” and “us” mean Quiet Crafts and the person who runs it.
Address: Rotterdam, the Netherlands [TODO: postal address]. Chamber of Commerce (KvK): [TODO: number]. Email: info@unbraid.app.
2. What un/braid is
un/braid is a VPN client. It routes apps through providers, servers and networks you choose.
- We do not provide VPN servers, sell VPN access or carry your traffic.
- We run no servers for the app. You need no account with us.
- The app has no paid features. You pay any provider, internet or mobile data charges yourself.
- The current app needs Android 13 or later on a 64-bit ARM device.
The app contacts outside services, including providers, DNS servers and connection checks. The privacy policy lists these connections.
3. Your licence
un/braid is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later (GPL). You may use, study, change and share it under that licence. Its source is on GitHub.
The GPL takes priority if these terms conflict with your GPL rights. You do not need to accept a separate contract to receive rights the GPL already gives you. GPL sections 15 and 16 contain its warranty and liability limits.
Our name and logo identify our app. If you share a changed version, please use a different name so people do not confuse it with ours. We do not maintain or approve other people’s versions.
4. Providers and other services
The app supports VPN providers, including NordVPN, Mullvad, Private Internet Access and IVPN; manual WireGuard, OpenVPN and Shadowsocks setups; and Tailscale or Headscale. Other services include M-Lab, Google Play and GitHub.
Your provider account is an agreement with that provider. Its terms, prices, device limits and privacy policy apply. Check that it permits your chosen setup. Not every provider feature or server is available through un/braid.
We are independent. Providers do not run or endorse un/braid. Their names belong to their owners. Commission links are explained in section 10.
Outside services can change their rules or systems, block the app or stop working. We do not promise continued access to them.
5. Your choices
Choose your routes, providers and settings with care. Check the route before relying on it, for example by checking the IP address a site sees. One successful check does not prove that every connection is safe.
Keep your logins and keys safe. Keep copies of setup files you cannot easily replace. Check connection limits and data charges.
You are responsible for what you do online. Follow the law where you are and your provider’s rules. Some countries restrict VPN use. These reminders do not add restrictions to the GPL.
6. Risks you need to know
- A VPN is not anonymity. Accounts, cookies, GPS and other information can still identify you. Your provider and the sites you visit can see some connection information.
- Direct means no VPN exit. Direct traffic has no VPN tunnel protection from un/braid, even when it passes through Android’s VPN interface.
- Connections can fail. A tunnel can drop, a server can change, and bugs or network changes can send traffic through the wrong route.
- Leaks are possible. Traffic may leave without a VPN when the app is off, paused, reconnecting, stopped or faulty. Android’s Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN can help. They do not prove that every connection uses a remote tunnel. Check Direct and local-network settings too.
- Displays can be wrong. Speeds, locations, statistics and connection status have limits. Sites may infer a different location.
- Speed tests publish data. M-Lab publishes results and the IP address it sees, indefinitely. A home exit exposes your home’s address. A routing failure could expose your own connection’s address. Testing a Tailscale exit node temporarily changes this phone’s exit node. See Privacy.
Do not rely on un/braid as your only protection where a leak or wrong route could cause serious harm, including hiding your identity from someone who could harm you.
7. How it was built and checked
The developer directs development and decides what is released. We have used AI coding assistants, including Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s Codex. Work so far has included code review, validation, software tests and security checks. We have used development practices such as version control and automated tests to check changes. The source and development history are public.
This describes work done. It is not a security certification, a promise of a particular result, or an agreement to carry out a fixed set of checks. Reviews and tests can miss faults, including serious ones.
8. Updates and help
Keep the app updated through your download channel, such as Google Play, F-Droid or GitHub. Older versions may lack fixes.
Report security problems privately to info@unbraid.app. Do not send passwords, tokens or full setup files.
Help is offered when we can. We promise no reply time, repair time, new feature or period of support. We may change the app or stop development or distribution. Your existing GPL rights remain.
9. Donations and tips
Donations are optional support. They buy no access, features, priority help, fixes, future releases or extra guarantees. You get the same app if you pay nothing.
Google Play tips are one-off payments. There is no Play subscription. GitHub Sponsors may offer one-off or monthly support. Cancel monthly support through GitHub to stop future payments under its rules.
Google and GitHub handle payments. Play tips follow Google Play’s refund policy. For payment problems, contact info@unbraid.app. We do not promise that donations are tax-deductible.
10. Affiliate links
We may use affiliate links to VPN providers. We mark each one next to the link. If you subscribe through one, we may earn a commission. The provider sets the price.
You do not have to use these links. They do not change the app’s features. A commission is not a guarantee of the provider’s service.
11. No guarantees
We provide the app and website “as is” and “as available”, with their faults. We give no warranty, express or implied, of fault-free operation, uninterrupted availability, fitness for your needs, or continued compatibility with providers, networks or devices.
We do not guarantee privacy, security, anonymity, a particular speed or location, or that traffic will always stay inside a tunnel. The limits in section 6 explain risks you should consider before use.
12. No liability
Each paragraph below is a separate limit on responsibility for loss.
12.1 Outside causes. We accept no liability for loss caused solely by your actions, an independent service you choose, someone else’s changes to the app, or events outside our control. This paragraph does not cover our own contribution to a loss or services acting on our behalf.
12.2 Indirect financial loss. We accept no liability for lost profit, lost income, missed business opportunities or business interruption resulting from use of the app or website. This paragraph concerns those financial losses only.
12.3 Free of charge. Because we supply the app and website free, without paid features or a paid support service, we accept no liability for loss from using them or being unable to use them, including loss caused by our ordinary mistakes or software bugs. This includes wrong routing, leaks, exposed or lost data, account restrictions and connection charges. It applies to claims under an agreement or another legal duty. A donation does not change who bears the risk.
13. Business use
This section applies only if you act for business or professional purposes and are not a consumer under applicable law.
13.1 Cap. For loss not excluded above, our total liability is limited to €100 for one event or connected events with the same cause. This covers claims under an agreement or another legal duty. The cap does not depend on donations.
13.2 Extra promises on redistribution. If you share the software and make extra promises that directly impose liability on us, you must cover that liability and reasonable defence costs, only within GPL section 7(f). This does not cover our own fault or liability we would have without your promises. We must tell you promptly of a claim and let you take part in its defence. Payment is due only for a final court award or a settlement you approve.
14. Privacy
Our privacy policy explains data handling. It is an information notice, not blanket consent to data use.
15. Changes
We may update these terms. We will change the date, keep earlier versions in the website’s public history and mention important changes in release notes. New terms apply to new agreements. Changes to an existing agreement need any notice and agreement required by law. They do not remove earlier claims or existing GPL rights.
16. Law and disputes
Dutch law applies. Consumers keep mandatory protection and court rights in their home country. Business disputes go to the competent court in Rotterdam. You can contact info@unbraid.app to try to resolve a problem.
If a clause is invalid, the others remain only if they can stand independently. These terms are written in English.
